The day started off chilly, but the sun promised to warm the winter air. We arrived at our destination, to hike to the summit of Moses Mountain. The trail head is located near Martock and the parking area was plowed and could accommodate about six vehicles.
We started out, going past the gate and then crossing a bridge. We took the trail to the left which had been travelled by snowmobiles, so was easy going. The trail goes upwards, and we hiked about a kilometer until we came to a marked trail on our right. There isn’t signage, but instead orange marking tape that marks the trail all the way to the summit. This trail led us through a lovely hardwood forest dotted with many large boulders. The trail was steep, and I was grateful for my ice crampons as they prevented me from slipping.
The first summit is marked with a Canada flag and is lovely for photos. Here, we stopped for a snack and took many photos! The trail continues on to a second summit and then loops back so you descend the same trail you take up the mountain. Our group did a lot of exploring around the rocks along the side of the mountain and we took many photos; the ice on the rocks was especially beautiful! The day turned out mild and it made for very comfortable hiking conditions. The dogs had a great time bounding up and down the trails and pausing for photo ops!

I would recommend choosing a day that the sky is clear with little wind to do this hike. That allows for the best views of the forest and lake below. I expect that it’s an advantage for the trees to be bare of leaves as well, as I think leaves would obscure your view. We only met one other group on the trail, which surprised me on such a beautiful day. If you are looking for a hike that is a couple of hours long and with beautiful views, I recommend this one!
